Final Progress Checkpoint and Rough Artist Statement

Artist Statement Rough

The animation [title] was inspired by stories told by a woman who used to work for a city morgue. She was responsible for bagging corpses and transporting them to the freezers. Her brief employment provided her with many sad, gruesome and disgusting stories, one of which provided the inspiration for this animation. A dog won't always be your best friend, especially when food is scarce.

The dog and the doughnut were solely animated in Flash and every thing else was animated with the magic of Aftereffects. Raster and vector based images were chosen for their dynamic appearance when combined, as well as to make the characters more pronounced against the busy environment.

What grabs my attention right away is just how dynamic everything looks as an overall composition. The focus is clearly on the characters, and you did a great job of doing this with your unique background, which automatically creates a certain mood.
The clean line work on your characters looks really good, and I think to help make sure none of that is lost, you could possibly lighten up the upper layer of the background. That should also push the characters even more.

The doughnut has so much personality...he's great. And you might already be planning on doing this (or it might have been suggested in class already), but if the doughnut is filled with jelly or some sort of filling you can have the remains on the dogs face at the end when you show him licking his chops.

I really like the composition as well. The whole thing matches the theme of your animation. I think that you should decrease the timing that everything is happening though. When I was looking at your animation, I thought I forgot to push play, the whole thing was a little too long. I think we talked about maybe having a little (really little) sketchy lines, just to show movement in the dog.I think it might be cool to add in some sound effects at the end, so we really know when the donut comes home. It will be really cool to see the final animation, it's going to be awesome. Just keep your timing in mind as your animation, maybe do a bit more exaggeration in your character's movements too (having the dog's back kind of slouched to show him at least a tad sad from loneliness). Other than that just keep working on it, it's really coming along well!

Everything clicks so well with this. The style of your characters really compliment the background well, and it all just fits.

With what you've got so far, I think the first "waiting" period could be cut down some. Almost too much time passes before the donut comes (will come?) into the shot. If they dog did something more than just blink and slowly wag his tail, that would help to make it feel like time is passing faster as well. It just seems like too little is happening in too long of a period of time.

The donut character is fanastic as he is too. As Rick said, he's full of personality. Once you get him animated, I'm sure he'll be even better.
